On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in New York He met many business and thought leaders such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Nobel Laureate Paul Romer, and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. He also met with experts in the healthcare, technology and education sectors and discussed national education policy, TB eradication efforts and policy making, among other topics.
Here is the list of eminent people Prime Minister Modi met on the first leg of his first state visit to the US at the invitation of President Joe Biden.
Attracting wider attention, Prime Minister Modi met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk and tweeted that he had multifaceted conversations on issues ranging from energy to spirituality. Meanwhile, the world’s richest person told the media that Tesla will be in India soon and that he plans to visit the country next year.
The business tycoon is the owner of the social media platform Twitter and he recently said that India’s rules for social media platforms are “quite strict” and that he would rather comply with government ban orders than risk Twitter employees being sent to jail. He also said that he would sell the company if the right person came along.

Musk co-founded six companies including electric car company Tesla, rocket maker SpaceX, The Boring Company, an infrastructure and tunnel construction services company, and Neuralink, a neurotechnology company that produces implantable brain-computer interfaces. He also co-founded and sold PayPal, an online payments platform company, and Zip2, which provided licensed online city guide services.
Nobel laureate Professor Paul Romer spoke about making cities sustainable
After meeting prominent economist and Nobel Prize winner Professor Paul Romer, Prime Minister Modi tweeted that he had spoken about how to make cities more sustainable and people-friendly. “I am delighted to meet the famous economist and Nobel laureate, Professor @paulmromer. We had extensive conversations about leveraging technology to improve lives. We also talked about how we can make our cities more sustainable and people-friendly,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
Romer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2018 for his work The Economy of Ideas which revealed how different it can be when an economy produces and distributes not only physical objects but also ideas. Currently, he directs the Boston College Center for the Economics of Ideas. He is also a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a non-resident scholar at the MacDonald Laurier Institute in Ottawa, Ontario.

He previously served as Chief Economist at the World Bank where he focused on the institution’s critical research function. He was also the founding director of New York University’s Maroon Institute for Urban Management. His extensive portfolio proves his stint with the US Department of Justice in the Microsoft Antitrust vase. Paul has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago. He has taught at New York University, Stanford, Berkeley, Chicago, and Rochester.

Referring to billionaire investor, Raymond Thomas Dalio as a friend, PM Modi wrote on Twitter, “Meet my friend, feature author and investor @RayDalio. I urged him to deepen investments in India and he also talked about the reform path of our government.”
Dalio is the founder of Bridgewater, an investment management firm and the New York Times bestselling author of Principles: Your Guided Journal. Founded in 1975 from his two-bedroom apartment, Bridgewater’s growth into a world-class enterprise in 47 years is credited to Dalio’s perseverance.

Dalio currently acts as a mentor to the company’s CIOs and investment committee. He served as Bridgewater’s CEO, Chief Information Officer, and Chairman of the Board. Chief Investment Officer magazine compared Dalio to Steve Jobs in an article titled “Is Ray Dalio the Steve Jobs of Investing?” He was also named by TIME magazine as one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” for 2012.
In addition, his company Bridgewater was named by Fortune Magazine as the fifth “most important private company in the United States” in 2016, Bridgewater says. He completed his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975.
Professor Nassim Nicholas Taleb presents his book to Prime Minister Modi
Author and Professor Nassim Nicholas Taleb presented his book Skin in the Game to Prime Minister Modi during his meeting. Referring to the meeting, PM Modi tweeted, “Professor @nntaleb has interesting views on many issues and I had the opportunity to hear from him on some of these topics. He was very interested in India’s development strides. You emphasized how to nurture entrepreneurship and risk-taking among our youth” .
Student, interdisciplinary expert, serves as Distinguished Emeritus Professor at New York University. The essayist, derivatives trader, wrote The Black Swan in 2007, which The Sunday Times noted as one of the 12 most influential books since World War II.

Earlier, he held senior positions at Credit Suisse First Boston, UBS, BNP-Paribas, Indosuez (now Calyon), Bankers Trust (now Deutsche Bank). He has testified twice before the United States Congress, and has also advised numerous heads of state, US agencies, and international organizations.
He holds a PhD from the University of Paris and an MBA from the Wharton School. The author of several books on Tibet, Buddhism, art, politics, and culture, Thurman was the first Western Tibetan Buddhist monk ordained by the Dalai Lama. The 2020 Padma Shri Laureate has been named by The New York Times as America’s leading expert on Tibetan Buddhism. He was also listed as one of the 25 most influential Americans in 1997.
His tryst with India dates back to his Harvard graduation days. He left Harvard on a spiritual mission throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. He arrived in India and met the Dalai Lama in 1962 and became a Tibetan Buddhist monk. Later, he finished his Ph.D. at Harvard University.
