Modi arrived here from New York where he led a historic event at the United Nations Headquarters earlier in the day to mark the 9th International Day of Yoga, which was attended by UN officials, diplomats and dignitaries.

Modi received a warm welcome outside his hotel. Members of the diaspora waiting to catch a glimpse of Modi waved the Indian flag and cheered him on.

They will be joined by the prime minister, who is visiting the United States at the invitation of President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, at a state banquet with a number of dignitaries on Thursday.

Moody arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Washington, D.C. where he was given a guard of honor in a continuous rain. The prime minister, who was wearing a coat, stood up to the national anthems of the two countries.

Indian expatriates braved the rain to welcome Modi to Washington’s Freedom Square. Some members of the community organized cultural programs including “Garba” and other folk dances outside the hotel in Washington, D.C. where Modi will be staying.

“We are very happy, this is an unforgettable event. We are very excited and looking forward,” said Kavita, a Kuchipudi dancer representing Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

In his departure statement, Modi said that this “special invitation” from President Biden and the first lady to visit a country is a reflection of the vitality and dynamism of the partnership between democracies.

Modi and Biden have had the opportunity to meet several times since his last official visit to the US in September 2021. “This visit will be an opportunity to enrich the depth and diversity of our partnership,” Modi said.

Modi said his discussions with President Biden and other top US leaders will provide an opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation as well as in multilateral forums such as the G20, Quad and IPEF (Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity).

Noting that the US Congress has always given strong bipartisan support to India-US relations, Modi said that during his visit, he will address a joint session of the US Congress at the invitation of the Congress leadership.

In Washington, Modi will also meet business leaders and interact with the Indian community. “We seek to deepen relations between India and the United States in key sectors such as trade, innovation, technology, and other similar areas,” he said.

Modi expressed confidence that his visit to the United States will strengthen the relations between the two countries based on shared values of democracy, diversity and freedom.

“Together we stand stronger in the face of common global challenges,” Modi said in his statement.

From the United States, Modi is heading to Egypt at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
