England veteran James Anderson has claimed the hosts will continue to press for the seven wickets they need to win the first Ashes Test of 2023 at Edgbaston on Day 5, even if it means they have to risk losing.
Australia need 174 runs to win and one good partnership could suddenly put them in the driver’s seat. However, Anderson believes that England will not put in defensive fields and that they will continue to attack to pick up those seven remaining overs.
Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of Day Five, here’s what James Anderson had to say about England’s approach:
“I think we’re going to keep attacking the fields. We kept the players up. Even yesterday the field was open. We want those catchers if we get the chance. What we’re being asked to do is entertain and send happy people home, and we’ve done that for four days. It’s not going to get hurt.” Nobody is more disappointed if we don’t win. The process isn’t worried about the outcome. We’re trying to do something special.”
James Anderson is confident Moeen Ali will cruise on Day 5 despite his finger injury. A blister on his right index finger caused Ali problems in the Edgbaston Test as he was unable to catch the ball very well. Still, Anderson feels the non-spinner will push himself for the team and get things done.
In this regard, the veteran Packer said:
“I think it hurts but he will definitely sit up. We have a 10 day break for him to recover and heal. We need a push from him to get over the pain barrier. We need him and he will show up there. I think he hurts but he should be able to run.”
If there are no more rain interruptions, playback is set to resume at 2:15pm local time (6:45pm IST).
