Former Australian bowler Merv Hughes has responded to a cricket fan who has accused the Australian legend of verbally abusing his brother in a toilet in Edgbaston.
According to some media reports, Hughes has been in England since hosting the Ashes tour for fans. The 61-year-old has been spotted in the stands at Edgbaston, following intently on the fifth day of the opening Ashes 2023 Test on Tuesday 20 June.
Hughes was pleased when Australia’s captains Pat Cummins (44*) and Nathan Lyon (16*) added 55 runs for the ninth wicket to lift the visitors to a famous one-wicket win.
However, a Twitter user posted a post on the micro-blogging site, alleging that the former cricketer abused his brother in the toilet in Edgbaston. He tweeted:
“@MervHughes332 For whatever reason you asked my brother to shut up the f**k today in the Edgbaston toilet when he simply asked you how the match was going. D**khead.”
Not someone who takes things lying down, Hughes blasted the user and replied:
“I’ve been there… I overheard the whole conversation – bigga d**khead like your brother!”
The former Australian cricketer was reputed to be one of the most colorful cricketers in the Australian team during his playing days. He appeared in 53 Tests and 33 ODIs, claiming 212 and 38 wickets respectively.
The former fast bowler has also scored two half-centuries in Test cricket with a best of 72*. He was the second leading wicket taker in the 1993 Ashes, claiming 31 scalps in six Tests at an average of 27.26.
As the fifth Edgbaston Test day approached, all three results were possible. After a long rain delay, Australia resumed their innings at 107/3 in pursuit of 281. They lost night watchman Scott Boland for 20 and Travis Head for 16.
Usman Khawaja (65 of 197) and Cameron Green (28 of 66) added 49 for the sixth wicket. However, they both lost with the target still a reasonable distance away. Alex Carey was then caught and bowled by Joe Root for 20 as the Australian slipped to 227/8.
Cummins and Lyon, however, ensured victory for the visitors for the ages.
