Aston Martin F1 team principal Mike Crack has defended driver Lance Stroll’s P9 finish, saying it was a fantastic comeback from the Canadian in his home race.
Stroll started the race from P16 after another poor showing in the qualifying session in variable conditions on Saturday in Montreal. He was very inauspicious throughout the race and made no headway in the field.
However, in the latter half of the race, he found himself in the battle for a last-place finish.
Lance Stroll edged Valtteri Bottas over the line in the dying seconds to finish P10, which became a P9 penalty five seconds after Lando Norris. While speaking to the media incl Planet F1Crack said:
“I think he did really well. (In qualifying), he struggled with his grip, and if you’re struggling like that, and you don’t have the confidence, it’s very difficult. (During the race), I think he was driving really well. We got him out of a move. traffic, and when he was out in traffic he managed the front runners’ lap times on solid tyres.
“If you’re on that DRS train, it’s really hard. To come from 16th to 9th is quite an achievement. On paper it only looks like 9th, and when your teammate finishes 2nd you think it’s not a good performance. But when you see Where did it come from, I think it was very good.
“I think he’ll take the positives from here and with the next races. We know he’s very strong on high speed circuits, and we have two sets of these circuits in the future, so I’m confident we can score with both (drivers).”
The Canadian driver continued his points-scoring streak in every Canadian Grand Prix he entered.
according F1.comSpeaking about his end of P9, Lance Stroll said:
“It was a good recovery drive to score two points this afternoon. We got lucky with the safety car; pitting the lap before it was posted meant we missed out on a cheaper pit stop while the cars around us were able to take it.
“At that point our focus was on turning in damage limitation and trying to get two points for the team. There are still positives to take from the race; the AMR23 felt strong and performed well. I had a fun final lap as well, passing Valtteri (Bottas) before the finish line directly “.
Lance Stroll trails teammate Fernando Alonso by 80 points going into the 2023 season.
