Boeing the supplier Soul Aviation Systems Work was suspended at a Wichita, Kansas, plant on Thursday after workers voted against a new labor agreement and against a strike. Spirit manufactures Boeing 737 MAX airframes and pylons for the Boeing 737 MAX Airbus A220s in the factory.
“In light of the decision to strike by Spirit AeroSystems employees represented by the International Union of Machinists and Aerospace Workers today, Spirit will suspend production of the plant prior to the expiration of the contract term,” Spirit said.
The halt in production began with the first shift on Thursday, two days before the contract covering about 6,000 workers was due to expire. The union said the strike was scheduled to begin shortly after midnight on Saturday.
“IAM’s dedicated and hardworking membership of Spirit AeroSystems has worked without fail during turbulent times, including the pandemic that has brought everything to a halt,” the union said in a statement. “Most of our members have concluded that the company’s offer is not acceptable. IAM District 70 and Local 839 will regroup and begin planning the next steps to bring the company back to the negotiating table.”
Shares of Spirit fell about 12% in early trading, while Boeing shares fell about 3%.
“We continue to monitor the situation and support our valued suppliers,” Boeing said in a statement.
