Power distribution companies in Gujarat – Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (PGVCL) and Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (UGVCL) – incurred losses of Rs 1,013 crore after Cyclone Biparjoy damaged power grid infrastructure in 10 districts of the state last week.

In a statement, on Thursday, the state government said that power supply to 35 towns and 4,945 villages in the ten most affected districts has almost resumed, except for 28 villages where restoration work has not yet started due to flooding.

Eight of the ten districts (Kutch and the districts in Saurashtra district) fall under the jurisdiction of the PGVCL, while two districts (Banaskantha and Patan) come under the UGVCL.

The state government said that 90 per cent of agricultural connections in the eight districts under PGVCL have been restored, except for Kutch, Jamnagar and Devbhoomi Dwarka. Without giving a figure for uninterrupted agricultural power connections, the state government has confirmed that all remaining connections will be restored by June 30.

Due to the cyclone, the 400kV, 220kV and 132kV substations of JETCO (Gujarat Power Transmission Company Limited) lost their supply of electricity.

Power has been restored at all of these substations. Of the 243 66kV substations where power supplies were disrupted during the cyclone, teams have managed to restore 240 substations, while power is being supplied to two substations in Kutch and one in Dwarka through a ‘connection line’ from other feeders, the government said.

The state government also said that the cyclone destroyed more than 1.17 lakh power poles, 16 thousand transformers and 75 transmission towers in these areas which fell in the path of the cyclone.

The government added that a total of 6,000 people – part of 1,089 teams – are working to restore power in the typhoon-affected areas.

Cyclone Pebargui hit the state last week, prompting a massive rescue operation by the state government.

It also left a trail of destruction in different parts of the state in the coastal areas.
