India also agreed to “remove retaliatory tariffs” on some US products such as chickpeas, lentils and almonds.
The US Trade Representative said Thursday that the United States and India have agreed to end six disputes at the World Trade Organization, following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden.
The USTR’s announcement came during Prime Minister Modi’s first state visit to the US, during which the two countries reached major deals on fighter jet engines, investment in semiconductors and space cooperation.
In a statement, the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) added that India “has also agreed to remove retaliatory tariffs” on some US products such as chickpeas, lentils and almonds.
The tariffs imposed by India came in response to US actions on steel and aluminum, and the US Trade Representative’s office said that “these tariff cuts will restore and expand market opportunities for US agricultural producers and manufacturers.”
“Today’s agreement marks the culmination of intense bilateral engagement over the past two years,” said Katherine Tay.
Of the six WTO disputes, three were brought by the United States and three by India. The statement said that they include procedures on solar cells and solar modules, and the renewable energy sector, as well as procedures on steel and aluminum products.
Below is a list of the six disputes that will be terminated:
• United States – CMA on certain hot-rolled carbon steel flat products from India (DS436);
• India – Certain Measures Concerning Solar Cells and Solar Modules (DS456);
• United States – Certain Actions Related to the Renewable Energy Sector (DS510);
• India – Measures Related to Export (DS541);
• United States – Certain Procedures for Steel and Aluminum Products (DS547); And
• India – additional charges for some products from the United States (DS585).
