The flood situation is constantly deteriorating in Assam, as more areas are inundated due to rising water levels due to the heavy rains that continue to hit the state. At least one death was reported due to the flood situation in Assam on Thursday, while about 5,000 others were affected in 22 districts.

The first flood fatality this season was reported from Tamulpur in Baksa district, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

After heavy rains, the water level of the Brahmaputra River flows above the danger level mark at Neamatighat in Jorhat district and at Dhubri, Beki River at Road Bridge, Manas River at Nh Road Crossing, Pagladiya River at Nt Road Crossing, Puthimaririver at NH Road Crossing.

Daily life is affected

According to the latest ASDMA bulletin, 495,700 people have been injured due to floods in Baksa, Barpeta, Chirang, Darang, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Sonitpur and Udalguri districts.

It added that Barpeta is the most affected with more than 3,25,600 people suffering, followed by Nalbari with more than 77,700 people, Barpeta with 65,221 people, and Lakhimpur with about 25,700 people.

The bulletin said as many as 24,023 people were also affected in Baksa, 19,208 people in Tamulpur, 13,704 people in Darang and 6,538 people in Kokrajhar district.

The department operates 83 relief camps in seven provinces, where 14,035 people have taken refuge, and runs 79 relief distribution centers in eight provinces.

The administration distributed 1,265 quintals of rice, dal, salt and 5,269.80 liters of mustard oil to the flood victims during the past 24 hours.

Precipitation to follow

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department’s regional center in Guwahati issued an ‘orange alert’ and forecast heavy to very heavy rains in the state over the next few days.

In the past 24 hours, the floodwaters have breached 10 dams and damaged 3 other dams, 92 roads, 3 bridges, many Anganwadi posts, irrigation canals and canals.

NDRF and SDRF personnel, fire and emergency services and civil defense are involved in rescue operations and in the last 24 hours they have rescued 561 people affected by the floods.
