It is reported that Barcelona legend Gerard Pique will announce his engagement to Clara Xia just one year after separating from Shakira.
Spanish digital newspaper Okdiario reports (via AS) that the couple plans to get married after just over a year since their first meeting. The duo announced their relationship in January.
Pique, 36, announced his separation from pop star Shakira last June. The couple did not marry during their 12-year relationship, because the Colombian did not want to.
Since then, the Barcelona champ has moved on to 24-year-old Clara Xia, and the newlyweds are already getting married in their sights. Sources close to the couple say they plan to tell friends and family about the news.
The couple was spotted in a well-known Rabat jewelry store on Barcelona’s Paseo de Gracia a few weeks ago. This sparked speculation that the duo might be looking to tie the knot. Reportedly, Pique told the shop assistant that the engagement ring was “already ironed” by a fellow shopper.
Looming for the couple is the wedding of the blaugrana icon’s brother, Mark. It is reported that they will be using this event on Saturday (June 24) to announce the news of their engagement.
Reportedly, Milan and Sasha, the former Spain national footballer, will not be attending their uncle’s wedding. They will be with Shakira in Miami, as the former partners have agreed that the children will stay in Catalonia until June 19.
Shakira reveals the strained relationship between Pique and former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola
Pique has become an icon at the Camp Nou during his 15 years with the Blaugrana. He started his youth career before heading to Manchester United but was signed by Barcelona again in 2008.
The Spaniard has won three Champions League titles, nine La Liga titles and seven Copa del Rey titles. He played 616 matches with Barcelona across various competitions before retiring last November.
The legendary defender spent several years playing under famous former coach Pep Guardiola. The duo enjoyed success at the Camp Nou, but it seems they didn’t have the fondest relationship.
Shakira says her former partner struggled while playing under the Manchester City coach. Appearing in court for a trial over the alleged fraud, she said (via The Sun):
Gerrard had a somewhat complicated relationship with Barcelona. With Guardiola, his relationship was very tense, “you go or I go.” It was a situation that made him suffer so much.”
Pique made 183 appearances under Guardiola, scoring 20 goals. He put together a formidable defense under the Spaniard that won a lot of titles.
However, Guardiola is known for his strict discipline and demanding managerial style and it appears he did not bond well with his former defender.
