The National Scheduled Castes Commission (NCSC) which conducted an investigation into the Mumbai Police investigation into Suicide case of IIT Bombay student Darshan Solanki In February, earlier this week, he wrote to the Mumbai Police to inform them that the investigation had been closed.

Solanki’s parents, who belonged to the Scheduled Caste, had alleged that their son had died due to caste discrimination at the First Institute. But the Mumbai Police arrested his colleague Armaan Khatri for allegedly threatening Solanki and said that caste discrimination was not the reason behind Solanki’s suicide.

A Mumbai Police officer said, “Two senior officers from SIT went to Delhi earlier this month when a hearing on the matter was held at the NCSC office. Solanki’s parents were also present. SIT sought information about the SIT investigation and the suspicions raised by the parents. Earlier this week, the committee wrote to us saying it would close the investigation, as the matter was subject to jurisdiction.”

SIT filed an indictment in the case last month in which Khatri was charged with soliciting suicide under sections of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989. SIT included a suicide note they found in Solanki’s room in which he blamed Khatri for his suicide. The police also stated that his poor academic performance was also a reason behind the suicide.
