Chandigarh roads to be restricted; advisory issued amidst Rajnath Singh rally

Chandigarh Police on Thursday issued a traffic warning to the general public urging them to avoid certain roads for the next two days in light of a BJP rally to be addressed by Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh at Sector 34, Fairgrounds on Saturday.

The police will hold a rehearsal along the entire route on Friday. The roads will not open between 5pm to 8pm when Rajnath Singh is said to be addressing the rally.

BJP Chandigarh President Arun Sood said, “About 1 lakh are expected to attend the rally. The party has made appropriate arrangements.”

“It is an election rally for the next Lok Sabha elections in 2024,” the sources said.

According to the UT Traffic Police, traffic will be diverted at Kali Bari Light Point, Sector 31/32-46/47 Chowk, Sector 32/33-45/46 Chowk and 33/34-44/45 Chowk on Shanti Path and from 33/34 -44/45 Chowk towards 33/34 Light Point on the Sarovar Trail on the day of the rehearsal and during the VVIP action on Saturday.

The route winds around the fairgrounds, and Sector 34 remains restricted to the general public. These stretches from New Labor Chowk (Sector 33/34-20/21 Chowk) through Burail Chowk (Sector 33/34-44/45 Chowk) are included on the Sarovar Trail.

From Sector 33/34 Light Point up to Gurudwara Sahib, Sector 34. c. Moreover, traffic may be restricted on some of the internal roads of Sector 34 in view of visiting VIPs.

Traffic police have asked to avoid the aforementioned stretches of roads from 5pm to 8pm on Saturday and from 3pm to 4:30pm on Friday.

Guests are requested to approach the workplace at Fairgrounds, Sector 34 from 34/35 Light Point towards Director of Health Services (DHS), Punjab and park their vehicles at Kachi Parking near Central Library, Sector 34 in front of Gurudwara Sahib Sector 34.

The general public are requested to approach the workplace at Fairgrounds, Sector 34 and park their vehicles in open ground in front of Shyam Mall, Sector 34. Further, they were requested to follow the Chandigarh Traffic Police social media account for real-time updates on traffic.

It has also been informed that strict action will be taken and vehicles will be towed away if vehicles are parked on a bike path or footpath and there is no parking area.
