Karnataka Environment and Forest Minister Eshwar Khander has instructed deputy commissioners and chief executives of all districts to give priority to raising the state’s green cover from the current 20.19 percent to 33 percent. As part of this effort, five crore seedlings will be planted across the state in collaboration with various government departments, and these seedlings will be geo-tagged for monitoring.
Khandari stressed the importance of prioritizing the increase in green cover, saying, “These seedlings will be taken care of, and audits will be conducted to assess their condition. Geo-tagging will help us protect them. We will work with all government departments to grow these seedlings.”
In addition, the state will celebrate Van Mahotsav, an annual tree-planting exercise, from July 1-7.

To supervise van Mahotsav’s activities, a committee was set up, although the names of the members were not disclosed. An official from the forest department explained that the committee includes a deputy commissioner, a police representative, an executive director of Zilla Panchayat, and a deputy forest governor, and its purpose is to ensure the success of Van Mahotsav.
In a separate incident, 18 people, including six children, were hospitalized in Bidar district after consuming contaminated water earlier this week. Khandari vowed to take action against those responsible, stating that the entry of untreated sewage into water pipes and the discharge of industrial waste into lakes and water bodies without proper treatment were among the main causes of water pollution.
