In a surprising turn of events, NASCAR came to the rescue in helping to reopen a major highway in Philadelphia. With rain looming in the forecast, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has sought an unconventional partner to ensure the timely reopening of I-95 in Northeast Philadelphia.
As a solution, NASCAR stepped in and sent a jet dryer from Pocono Raceway to assist in the process of drying the newly laid asphalt, allowing crews to proceed with the necessary paint and layout.
The car in question is a signature sight on the racetrack – a red Chevrolet Silverado with a helicopter engine. The powerful airflow of the jet dryer is usually used to dry the racetrack after rain, and helps the moisture evaporate quickly, allowing the races to resume immediately.
This time, its capabilities will be used to keep the asphalt dry and provide much-needed dry patches for paving and striping operations on I-95.
Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his excitement about NASCAR’s unexpected involvement, calling it “a pretty cool solution” during an interview with Fox29.
“We need patches of dry time to complete the paving and, really, most importantly, the tape process,” Gov. Josh Shapiro said on Fox29 Thursday morning.
Governor Josh Shapiro Praises “The Amazing Guys of NASCAR”
With the addition of Pocono Raceway’s innovative approach and team support, the reopening of I-95 is expected to proceed smoothly and efficiently.
He highlighted the collaboration as a fusion of the ingenuity of Delco (Delaware County) and the flexibility of Philadelphia, enthusiastically saying:
“I said the other day Delco’s ingenuity meets Philly’s determination. Let’s put on top of that the Poconos racetrack ingenuity, and the amazing guys at NASCAR over there help us out on the 95.”
The idea to use the jet dryer on a public road originated from Benaldot’s Secretary of State Mike Carroll, who formerly represented Monroe County in the Pennsylvania home and was a longtime visitor to the Pocono Raceway.
Carroll admitted that this jet dryer application is unprecedented, at least as far as he knows. Note with humor:
“I don’t think anyone has this on their bingo card.”
The NASCAR Pocono track jet dryer helping reopen I-95 embodies the spirit of innovation, showing that solutions can be found in the most unlikely of partnerships.
As the drying process develops, the success of this endeavor will not only make it easier to reopen I-95, but also serve as a reminder that collaboration and creativity can lead to extraordinary results.
