The NBA offseason is already off to a hot start and free agency hasn’t even started. There were many huge deals and the draft brought some surprises.

Free agency and informal transactions will soon dominate the basketball schedule. This year’s class isn’t the most exciting in recent years. However, the NBA constantly presents so many surprises and dreadful deals that the rosters are constantly shaken up.

The free agency period begins at 6 PM ET (Eastern Time) on June 30. And that’s 5 p.m. Central, 4 p.m. on the Mountain, and 3 p.m. Pacific. For international audiences at 3:30am IST and 12am CEST.

Teams can legally negotiate with players at 6 PM ET. Players must wait until July 6th at 12:01 AM ET to officially sign Agreed Deals. This gives players and teams the option to back out of the contract before the official signing period.

What happens if teams talk to players ahead of time?

If teams talk to players too early, they’re violating the mess-up rules. If a team is found to be in violation of the tamper, it is fined and may lose draft picks. The Philadelphia 76ers and Chicago Bulls lost second round picks in this year’s draft due to tamper violations.

Twitter will catch fire once the period starts. The NBA staff will quickly report the details of the contracts agreed upon and which players transfer teams.

Another element of free agency is signing and deals. This occurs when a free agent (unrestricted or restricted) signs a contract with his current team with the agreement to be traded to his preferred destination. This allows the current team to get some compensation instead of losing the player for free. The receiving team then agrees to receive the newly signed contract.

Some of the big name agents to watch are James Harden and Kyrie Irving. The latest reports indicate that both players will be returning to their former teams, but you never know with these two mercurial superstars.

Khris Middleton and Draymond Green have both opted out of their contracts and will be free agents to watch. It will also be interesting to see what kind of offers the restricted free agents receive from the Los Angeles Lakers. Austin Reeves and Rui Hachimura may be looking for big new deals after their playoff run.
