Former India captain MS Dhoni added another feather to his impressive cap on 23rd June 2013 as the Men in Blue beat England in thrilling fashion to win the ICC Champions Trophy.
The derby in Birmingham was reduced to 20 matches after a rain delay. India finished on 129/7 thanks to the fine strikes of Virat Kohli (43), Ravindra Jadeja (33) and Shikhar Dhawan (31).
While the total looked sub par at one point, the Indian bowlers produced exceptional bowling performances to tilt the pendulum in their side’s favour. The likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant Sharma picked up two wickets each, while Umesh Yadav finished with a single scalp.
Ashwin was tasked with defending 14 times from the final. The wily spinner showed great composure under pressure, helping India secure a memorable five-wicket win.
It is noteworthy that with this win, MS Dhoni became the first captain in history to win all three major titles in the International Cricket Championship. He received widespread praise for his leadership in the final.
Dhoni handed the ball over to Ishant Sharma in the 18th minute, even though the half pacer had conceded 27 runs in his three overs. It was a big turning point in the match as seamer and combination hitter Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara were dismissed off successive balls.
