Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met Boeing CEO David L Calhoun in Washington and discussed the company’s larger presence in India’s aerospace sector, including in the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of aircraft.
The meeting came a day after the US government announced the airline’s plan to invest US$100 million in infrastructure and software to train pilots in India.
This comes on the heels of Air India signing firm orders for more than 200 aircraft earlier this week from Boeing, which include 20 787 Dreamliners, 10 777Xs and 190 737 MAXs.
After his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, the Boeing CEO said the most important takeaway was Prime Minister Modi’s “passion for India’s development.”
“He has a particular interest in aviation and space. It’s a big visionary. I’d like India to play an important role not only for India but for the region in general. I think it’s great that technologies and opportunities align with the vision that a leader has for the country and that’s where we are,” added Calhoun.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the prime minister had also called on Boeing to invest in India’s aerospace manufacturing sector.

On Friday, Prime Minister Modi met the tech chief executives of the United States and India in Washington.
The last day of the state visit was marked by pledges of deeper cooperation between the United States and India in areas including space, artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
President Joe Biden and Modi met with CEOs including Apple’s Tim Cook, Google’s Sundar Pichai and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella. The CEOs discussed the vast opportunities and avenues for deepening corporate collaboration in cutting-edge technology and research and development between India and the United States.

“He managed the event,” said Arindam Baghi, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), in a tweet.
The Prime Minister emphasized the huge potential of harnessing India-US technology cooperation for socio-economic growth.
The White House said OpenAI’s Sam Altman, NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, and Indian tech leaders including Anand Mahindra, chairman of the Mahindra Group, and Mukesh Ambani, president of Reliance Industries, are among the leaders.
“Our partnership between India and the United States will go a long way, in my opinion, to define what the 21st century will look like,” Biden told the group, adding that technology cooperation will be a big part of that partnership.
This development also comes along with a series of deals signed by US and Indian companies on the sidelines of Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with US President Joe Biden.
