In a horrific incident, three women, including a teenager, drowned in Bakra Canal in Khanuri district of Sangrur district on Friday morning.

The accident occurred around 8 am when the driver, Ramphal, was taking nine women, including a 13-year-old girl, in the tractor with the rice seedlings to another village for planting.

The tractor lost its balance on the Kucha road along the canal near the village of Jhela and fell into the canal, drowning three women and the rest were rescued by divers.

The deceased have been identified as Geeta, Kamlesh and 13-year-old Payal.

They were all from the nearby village of Manyani, SHO Khanauri Saurabh Sabharwal said.

An eyewitness reported that the dead man fell near the edge of the canal and it was very difficult to rescue them. Their bodies had not been recovered as of the submission of this report. All the rescued persons were taken to a private hospital in Tohana, Haryana.
