In zila parishads and panchayat samitis this time, the TMC won only 0.86% and 8.22% of the uncontested seats, respectively.
A senior TMC leader said, “Zela Parisad nominations were submitted in the offices of the District Magistrate. This time, the party instructed to keep the peace in Dubai Municipality offices. This is why opposition parties put forward more nominations for ‘Zela Parisad’” .
Opposition parties claimed that they were able to field more nominations this time around since the TMC’s organizational control weakened.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rejected this allegation and said, “This shows that democracy prevailed in the state. In Tripura, 90% of the panchayat seats were won by the BJP. Here, more than 2.70 lakh nominations were submitted. Don’t forget that we are an elected government.”
BJP leader Samik Bhattacharya said, “This is nothing but a data gimmick. They have prevented opposition candidates from filing nominations in Diamond Harbour.”
Accusing the TMC of using state machinery to prevent opposition parties from submitting their candidacies or to force them to withdraw their candidatures, Sujan Chakraborty, leader of the Communist Party of China (CCP), said, “But with the help of the people, we have been able to nominate nominations in most places. The TMC is afraid of defeat imminent.”
