Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to Kamala Harris, the first woman of Indian descent to be the Vice President of the United States, saying her achievements are a major inspiration not only for the United States but also for women in India and across the world.
Speaking at a luncheon hosted by VP Harris in Washington, D.C., the Prime Minister also remembered her mother, Dr. Shyamala Gopalan, who came to the US from India.
Kamala Harris’ mother, Dr. Shyamala Gopalan, came to the United States in 1958. At that time, the majority of people did not have telephones. That’s why she’s been writing handwritten letters to her family. It never severed its ties with India… India was close to it despite being thousands of miles away,” the prime minister said.
“You have taken her inspiration to a new level. Your achievements are a major source of inspiration not only for the United States but also for women in India and across the world.”

He also thanks VP Harris and Secretary Blinken for the warm welcome. “I extend my sincere gratitude to you for your warm words. Today I am pleased to be among you again at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the past three days, I have participated in many meetings. In all of these meetings, there was one thing in common. Everyone agreed that friendship and cooperation between the two countries should be deepened. The people of India and the United States.”
VP Harris said she has seen India’s global impact. “In Southeast Asia, vaccines made in India have saved lives. On the African continent, India’s longstanding partnerships underpin prosperity and security. Through the Indo-Pacific, India is helping to foster a free and open region.”
Harris Road to Vice President
Harris is the first black American, and the first Asian American, to serve as Vice President of the United States. Harris is known to have shattered many glass ceilings. She was the first district attorney in San Francisco and the first woman of color in California to serve as a district attorney.
Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Auckland. Harris’ father immigrated from India and Jamaica, respectively. She attended Howard University, a “historically black college” in Washington, D.C., and studied law at the University of California, Hastings. After completing her legal studies, Harris worked for eight years in the Alameda County District Attorney’s office, trying child sexual abuse cases. She was subsequently elected to serve as Attorney General of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011 and Attorney General of California from 2011 until 2017. During her tenure as California Attorney General, Harris came to the attention of national Democrats, including Barack Obama.
