15 days since panchayat poll announcement, 9 deaths in state

Nine people have been killed in alleged political violence since polling dates were announced in West Bengal on 8 June. Among the dead, five were from the Transitional Military Council, two from the Congress, and one each from the CPM, the ISF and the BJP.

Folchand Sheikh (32), Agent of Murshidabad and Agent of Congress

Elsheikh was killed on June 9, the first day the nominations were submitted, as Congress alleged he was an active party agent. He was working in Kerala and came to his village in Bengal about 10 days ago. Police arrested two people for the murder, and said the killing was the result of an old land dispute. Meanwhile, the Transitional Military Council denied allegations of any connection to his killing.

Mansour Alam (23), CPM worker from North Dinajpur

A flag was shot on June 15 during clashes in Chopra district of Uttar Dinajpur district on the last day for filing nominations. Locals said he was associated with the Democratic Youth Federation of India. According to the police, he was shot when CPM members, Congress and his supporters were on their way to file nominations, and the miscreants opened fire. A murder case was filed and 17 people were arrested in this regard.

Muhyiddin Al-Mulla (24), Internal Security Forces worker and day laborer from Bahngar

Al-Mulla died in an alleged clash between the Internal Security Forces and Transitional Military Council workers on June 15. The police filed a case of murder and the names of 20 people in the FIR, including the leader of the Transitional Military Council, Arab al-Islam, and his son, Hakim al-Islam.
Rashid Mulla (in his 40s), TMC bet from Bhangar

Believed to be close to the local Moroccan Liberation Army, he was allegedly part of the clash between ISF workers and the Transitional Military Council on 15 June. A murder case has been filed in this regard. Police have filed seven cases in connection with the unrest in Bhangar, including three murders, including the deaths of an ISF worker and two TMC activists. Some employees of the Internal Security Forces have been arrested in the case of Mola’s murder.

NASCAR Rago (40), TMC worker from Bhangar

He was allegedly beaten to death during the same clashes on 15 June.

Mustafa Sheikh (62) TMC filter from Malda

He was on his way home on June 18 when unknown persons attacked him. The Sheikh was a former President of the Gram Panchayat and was contesting the Panchayat elections from Sojapur. The police are investigating if he was killed by other people from the same party who were vying for a ticket.

Muhammad Haq (42), TMC Local District Secretary from Murshidabad

He was overseeing 14 panchayat candidates and was killed on 16 June. Bajri Alam Sheikh, a member of the Caucus Committee in Congress, was arrested along with five others in connection with the case.

Sambhu Das (28), BJP worker from Cooch Behar

Das was the son-in-law of Bishakha Das the BJP candidate in the BJP elections and was the applicant during the nomination process. Das’s family alleged that he was attacked by armed men when he walked out of the house on 17 June. They also claimed that they were threatened with withdrawing Peshaka’s candidacy.

Dhangwe Chobe (46)a TMC post from Purulia

The TMC town chief of Adra, Chobe, was killed on 22 June. He was inside the party office when some people shot him. His bodyguard, Tanmay Paul, was injured in the accident. Two people, including the local convention candidate, were arrested.
