The Uttar Pradesh government is likely to approve a large “Digital Kumbh Museum”, which will not only showcase India’s rich culture and heritage but also highlight the historical and mythological significance of the world’s largest religious gathering.

The digital museum, to be constructed at a cost of Rs 60 crore, has been proposed by the state tourism ministry as part of preparations for Mahakumbh 2025 for a once-in-a-lifetime experience for visitors. The proposal came two weeks ago when the ministry presented it to the general secretary in Lucknow.

According to the scheme, the Digital Kumbh Museum will be one of the most “modern” museums of the time and will be equipped with facilities such as central heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). It will contain audio-visual rooms and other audio-visual features.

“It will also house various galleries with spiritual themes, including the Spirituality and Kumbh Mela Interpretation Gallery, the Samudra Manthan Gallery, and the Akhada Gallery,” a senior official of the state tourism ministry told News18.

Other than that, the museum will provide facilities such as a food court and souvenir shop, allowing visitors to purchase or download publications and products related to the Kumbh Mela. The officials added that there will also be facilities such as a cultural hat (Akshaivat), a museum, an exhibition, a theater (Amrit Kalash) and a guest house.

The museum will also display the sacred Sangam in the entrance lobby through digital projection. The three rivers (Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati) will be shown using three different colours, based on animated fractal geometry and static graphics.

There will also be an interactive map of Prayagraj which will be displayed on a large screen in the translation gallery, which can be explored through touch interactions. Here, along with the history of Prayagraj, information about the modern city will also be provided,” said a senior official.

Similarly, in the Samudra Manthan exhibition, the epic story of ‘Samudra Manthan’ will be presented through earthly projection. The Akhada Gallery will showcase the country’s Akhada culture and has an interactive wall related to Shankaracharya describing his journey. In the temporary city there will be video walls while in ‘triveni sangam’ there will be a combination of floor, wall and ceiling.

Other than the Museum, the Department of Tourism has proposed other development works, including the development and beautification of Bharadwaj Ashram, Dwadash Madhav Mandir, Nagvasuki Mandir, Dashashwamedh Mandir, Manakameshwar Mandir, Alopashankari Mandir, Padila Mahadev Mandir and temples along the path of Panchkoshi Parikrama Mahadev and Kalyani Mandir.

The state government also has plans to beautify and build the ‘Takshak Tirth’, temples in Karachana district, Akshayavat/Saraswati Koop/Patalpuri Mandir, Hanuman Mandir, floating wharf, and restaurant.

The estimated cost of all these shows, including the Kumbh Digital Museum, is in excess of Rs 170 crore. In addition, there is an estimated cost of Rs 120 crore for various civil works and Rs 18 crore for facade lighting related works.
