Victor Wimpanyama is expected to make the San Antonio Spurs more competitive next season in his first year in the NBA. The Spurs had the second-worst record in the NBA (22-60), which is what they needed to get the French generational talent.

Chris Broussard, on “First Things First,” is on the same boat as almost every basketball fan and analyst. He sees the #1 draft pick doing great things but with a little caveat:

“I expect Wimpanyama to deliver big numbers as a junior; don’t expect a playoff berth for Tottenham.

“I would expect more than 20 points, 8-9 rebounds, it might be a little low, but we will see 2-3 blocks, which is huge in the NBA.

“I expect him to have a great individual season, not necessarily make the playoffs because I don’t know who the veterans are going to be there and he’s the rookie of the year.”

Next year’s San Antonio Spurs team will likely include rookies like Jeremy Suchan, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Malachy Branham. Veterans Doug McDermott, Zack Collins, Devonte Graham and Khim Birch may be retained.

Tottenham boss Gregg Popovich will make Victor Wimpanyama the focal point of everything they run at both ends of the Earth. Suchan, Fasil and Johnson, who had great performances last season, will have to adjust their playing style around Wimpy.

San Antonio has both tradable players and seed capital to acquire for veterans to maximize all that Wembanyama brings. If Spurs can get quality players who will blend into the squad, Broussard won’t be closing in on a possible return to the playoffs.

Victor Wimpanyama can drag the San Antonio Spurs to the championship

Las Vegas expects the San Antonio Spurs to have at least 35 wins in Victor Wimpanyama’s first year in the NBA. The last time they had more than 35 wins was during the 2018-19 season when they won 48 games.

Wimpanyama, the improvements of Sochan, Vasil, Johnson and the veteran assistants may be enough for Tottenham to compete for the championship.

Nas Reed, Brook Lopez, and Fred VanVleet are just three of the names that have been linked to the San Antonio Spurs. Reid and Lopez are two great players in the training position along with Wimpanyama, who has already said he prefers playing in the attacking position. VanVleet is a significant upgrade over Devonte Graham.

If the Spurs can get two of those, they can challenge for one of the two game points.

Here is what Kendrick Perkins predicted about Victor Wimpanyama and Tottenham:

“I think he’s going to be in the All-Star game next year as a junior. I also think the Spurs will be in the playing cycle. All you have to do is not be in the bottom five of the Western Conference.

With this guy’s skill set, it would be real.

Spurs don’t want to rush a Wimpy, but they also know how to build a team of the deciding caliber. Basketball fans can’t wait to see how San Antonio fares in this French rookie season.
