Amid raids by the Enforcement Directorate on BMC officials and Aaditya Thackeray’s assistant in the Covid jumbo center ‘scam’, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday, in a counterattack against the ruling BJP, demanded an investigation into what happened. The PM Cares Fund has been dubbed a “scam” and other civic bodies in the state which was under BJP rule during Covid-19.
Where did the money from the PM Cares fund go? Thousands of times rupees go into the account, but the details are never revealed. Ratan Tata alone has given more than 1000 crores. The Prime Minister’s Citizens Assistance and Emergency Relief Fund was set up in 2020 as a public charity fund with the aim of having a dedicated national fund to deal with distress primarily related to Covid-19. Udhav also demanded investigations into the civil bodies of Thane, Pune, Pimbri Chinchwad and Nagpur as well as those elsewhere, particularly in BJP-ruled states such as Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. While the municipal corporations of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Nagpur were governed by the BJP during the pandemic, Thane was under the undivided rule of the Shiv Sena and is said to be controlled by Prime Minister Eknath Shinde.
“You can certainly do an investigation into the transactions and performance of BMC during the Covid period. We are not afraid. But there was the Epidemic Act and the Disaster Management Act at that time. The Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) himself imposed the Disaster Management Act. Uddhav of the BJP has dared to conduct similar investigations across the country ruled by the BJP.

Uddhav convened a meeting of Sena UBT office officials at the Shivaji Natya Mandir in Mumbai ahead of a massive rally to BMC scheduled on 1 July.

The emergency manager is investigating alleged irregularities in the assignment of a civil contract to a company to operate a jumbo COVID treatment facility.
