Day two of the 2023 KPMG Women’s Championship ended with several well-known golfers, including Nelly Korda and Athaiah Theticul, missing the 36-hole cut. Lexi Thompson was a golfer who came back alive late Friday to save the weekend. The golfer bowled an impressive four birdies in her last five holes to make the cut line on the lower Baltusrol course.
As last week’s Meijer LPGA Classic winner Leona Maguire leads the action, Thompson sat on a T49 after skipping the cut line in round two. The golfer has shared the position with the likes of Ashleigh Buhai, Lucy Li, and Danielle Kang, among others.
After the exploding shot, the golfer opened up to cascading birdies. The 28-year-old said he plans to shoot nails during the tour.
Speaking to the media after the 2023 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship was cut short, Lexi Thompson said, as reported by Golfweek:
“I’m like, I just need to shoot the nails. Trust me, I’ve been trying to do it all along. Just kind of tapped in. Made some really good shots and stuck with my next game plan.”
An impressive second round from Lexi Thompson at the KPMG Women’s Championship
Lexi Thompson moved more than 50 places on the leaderboard, outside of the top 100, within five holes on Friday.
The golfer, who didn’t have the best start at the KPMG Women’s Championship, had a 5-over-76 on Thursday. However, she bore two consecutive holes on Friday before making three pars on her 12th, 13th and 14th holes. She curled a 25-foot par for birdie on the eighth hole (her 17th) to get fans on their toes.
The 11-time LPGA Tour winner finished her last five holes on 4-under-par and made the cut by two shots. not currently. Ranked ninth in the world, Thompson will make her fifth LPGA start of the season this weekend.
After missing out on three of her last four matches, including last week’s Meijer LPGA Classic, the Women’s PGA Championship was the perfect comeback for Thompson. The golfer said, opening up to himself:
“Like I said, it’s been a struggle all this kind of year except for my first event of the year. But I’ve probably been working harder than I’ve ever been in my entire life on the golf course and when I come home I train. Just to be able to get to the finish and make those Birdies, it’s nice to see hard work pay off, even though I’m still only four. I’m taking it. I’m taking the little little win now and building it up.”
After making the hard cuts, it will be interesting to see how Thompson fares over the weekend at the 2023 Women’s PGA Championship.
