The Indian ‘B’ team, comprising national champions Kamal Chola, Brijesh Damani and Sparash Perwani, took home the gold medal at the 2023 ACBS Snooker Championship in Tehran, Iran.
In the summit match, the Indians were off to a shaky start losing their first two matches, but recovered well to win the next three frames and Hong Kong defeated China 3-2 to emerge champions.
The winning Indian team was coached by former world pool champion Ashok Chandilia.
India No. 1 Chawla got off to a shaky start and lost to Cheong Ka Wai with a score of 33-82 frames. Later, Damani failed to score against Zhang Yuqiu, who scored a dominant 100-0 win in the second frame, to give Hong Kong a 2-0 lead.
However, in the third doubles round, Chawla and Damani pulled off a tense win over the pairing of Chang Yu-kyu and Tam Yun-fung by 66-29 points to close the gap.
Chawla found form to win the fourth frame against Zhang Yu-qiu 115-0, tie the frame scores at 2-all and force the tiebreaker.
In frame five, Damani snatched a hard-fought victory over Cheung Ka-wai by 66-45 points and secured the gold medal for India.
In the semi-finals, India B beat Afghanistan 3-2 while Hong Kong China defeated Malaysia 3-1.
The Indian ‘A’ team of Pankaj Advani, Aditya Mehta and Laxman Rawat were knocked out in the quarter-finals, losing 2-3 to Afghanistan.
Earlier, India’s Ryan Razmi won a bronze medal at the 2023 Asian U-21 Snooker Championship.
