Navi Mumbai Police in Thane district of Maharashtra state has registered a case against two brothers for allegedly defrauding five people of nearly Rs 1.5 crore under the pretext of selling them flats, an official said on Saturday.

The case against Kharghar resident Laxman Devaji Vavya (Patil) and his brother Harish came on the complaint of a tax consultant from Mulund, a suburb of Mumbai, and four of his friends.

Citing the complaint filed at CBD Bilapur Police Station, the official said the brothers were accused of selling apartments to the five who had already been mortgaged or sold to others.

He said that while the transactions began in 2018, the brothers did not hand over the apartments to the complainants and did not return the money even after repeated follow-ups. The official added that the case was registered on Friday and no arrests have been made so far.
