LAHORE: A Pakistani court on Saturday acquitted former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a 37-year-old case over his alleged transfer of “precious state land” to one of the country’s prominent media house owners as a “bribe”.
The court ruling came days after the federal government led by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif, made significant amendments to laws to lift the lifetime ban on politicians.
Nawaz Sharif was disqualified in 2017 by the Supreme Court. In 2018, he became ineligible to hold public office for life following the Supreme Court’s ruling Panama Papers case.
“The Lahore Accountability Court acquitted thrice Chief Minister Nawaz Sharif in a case related to the transfer of 54 channels (6.75 acres) of valuable state land to Jang/Geo Media Group owner Mir Shakil Rahman in Lahore while he was the chief minister of Punjab,” a judicial official told PTI. 37 years ago.”
“Judge Rao Abdul Jabbar acquitted him after the country’s anti-graft authority (National Accountability Bureau) informed the court that after recent amendments to its law (by the coalition government led by Shahbaz Sharif) the case does not fall under its consideration.” official said.
The court had previously acquitted Mir Shakil Rahman in this case.
The previous NAB indictment accused Nawaz Sharif, who was also the Chairman of the Lahore Development Corporation (LDA) in 1986, of abusing his power and offering Rahman an undue interest by agreeing to exempt 54 valuable plots of land measuring one canal in one block ( compressed form) located in H-Canal Block MA Jauhar Town, Lahore.
Nawaz Sharif, the ruling Supreme Leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has been living in self-exile in the UK since November 2019.
Before leaving for London on four-payer bail by the Lahore High Court on medical grounds, Sharif was serving a seven-year sentence in The case of corruption of Azizia Mills.
Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman and ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan alleged that former army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa had maneuvered to oust Sharif from prison and subsequently struck a deal with him.
The PML-N says its supreme leader will return to Pakistan as soon as the general election date is announced.
Elections are scheduled to be held in the country in October after the current government’s term ends on August 13.
