Indian Secular Front (ISF) MLA Naushad Siddiqui received a seven-member security cover on Sunday afternoon, days after he took him to the Calcutta High Court to seek Class Z coverage in light of the violence ahead of the state’s panchayat elections. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the center to provide security to a Bhangar lawmaker.
Citing the threats to his life in the aftermath of the violence in Bhangar in South 24 Parganas while filing nominations for the Panchayat elections, Siddiqui earlier sought Class Z security from the Center and State Government. When he got no response, he moved to the Supreme Court.
It was reported that members of the central paramilitary forces arrived at his home in Furfurah Sharif village in Hooghly district. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, the only MLA of the ISF said it did not yet know the level of security it had received.
Despite being notified by the state and central governments, I did not get security and had to proceed to the Supreme Court. The Calcutta High Court has directed the Central Home Ministry to ensure my safety. Accordingly, a seven-member Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) team from the Central Ministry of Interior arrived at my house and took charge of my security. It is not yet clear what class of security I was given. The next hearing in the case is on Monday in the Kolkata High Court. Maybe I’ll know the details there.
On 15 June, the last day for submitting nominations, ISF and Trinamool Congress workers clashed in Beguiganj bazaar in Bhangar. As a result of the violence, three people were killed, including a worker in the Internal Security Forces.
