With nearly three months to go for the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou in September, India’s chief women’s boxing coach, Bhaskar Bhatt, has resigned from his post.
A dispute with Bernard Dunn, the High Performance Director of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), is one of the reasons for Bhatt’s resignation, say sources within the organisation.
The International Red Cross appointed Dunn, last year’s Irish boxing expert, to oversee national training camps in the build-up to the Paris 2024 Olympics. Dunne has been away from Ireland on personal business since April and recently joined camp.
“He (Don) came home for personal business, but he’s been attending almost all BFI meetings,” a senior BFI official told Sportskeeda by phone.
A women’s national boxing camp to prepare for the Asian Games has been in progress at the Patiala National Institute of Sports (NIS) since April. Bhatt quit his job when he started regularly evaluating the boxers attending the camp. The Asian Games in China will be the first qualifying tournament for the Paris Olympic Games.
Dan gave regular evaluations, including attendance and physical fitness at national camp, to assess the athletes’ progress.
According to the sources, Bhatt was supervising the National Women’s Camp but she resigned last week. He joined his father’s division – Sports Authority of India (SAI) – at Rohtak’s National Boxing Center of Excellence. He was not available for comment.
Bhatt was appointed president of the women’s elite team in November 2021. The national team gave a good report of itself at the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships held in March.
Neetu (48kg), Nikat Zarin (50kg), Lovlina Borgohin (75kg) and Sawiti Bora (81kg) won gold medals in their respective weight categories.
