A day after two workers drowned in an overflowing manhole in Govandi, the contractor and three others were arrested by the Mumbai police for failing to provide any adequate safety equipment to the two men at the time of their duties.

According to police officials, Ramkrishna Das, 22, and his uncle Sudhir Das, 35, were dispatched to carry out routine water flow tests in Baiganwadi area of ​​Shivaji Nagar in Govandi.

Officials said the canal was overflowing because of the heavy rains that swept large parts of the city on Saturday.

However, while doing the work, the two men in the manhole fell into an overflowing stream and drowned.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade said the accident occurred at 4.22pm on Saturday on the 90-foot Shivaji Nagar Road. The bodies of the two men were later recovered. They were declared dead before they were admitted to Rajawadi Hospital.

BMC’s initial report stated that the workers had been employed by a private contractor and were doing cleaning work when the accident occurred.

“It is a recently constructed sewage tunnel. The process of testing the water flow was going on, which is a routine operation before the monsoon every year. There were two workers inside. But due to heavy rains, the canal overflowed and the workers unfortunately drowned.

Later on the complaint of Ramkrishna’s father, Niranjan, officials from Shivaji Nagar Police Station registered a case under Section 304 (Penalty for murder not amounting to murder and 34 (Common intent) of the Indian Penal Code against contractor Asjad Ahmed Arshad Siddiqui, Officer Krishna Rudaji Purohit, Superintendent Pramod Mishra and Ashwin Dalaram Chaudhary.

A senior police officer said, “The four people have been arrested for not taking necessary safety measures which claimed the lives of two people. We are investigating the matter further to see if there are more people involved.”
