A few months ago, the BJP was looking to move forward in Telangana and focus on the assembly elections scheduled for later this year. But after losing in neighboring Karnataka in last month’s state elections, the party seems to have lost momentum in Telangana as well.
At the heart of the party’s troubles lies the unhappiness of two senior leaders, Etila Rajinder and Kumaterdi Raj Gopal Reddy, both of whom want additional responsibilities in organization and want out the current state unit chief Pandey Sanjay Kumar. Rajender, who joined BJP from Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in 2021, wants to be featured as ‘Shadow CM’. Leaders like Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President JP Nada and BJP National Secretary in charge of Telangana Tarun Chogh are in touch with Rajinder and Reddy to sort out the problems and forge a united front against the BRS.
“We were on cloud nine until the Karnataka Assembly results were announced. Then, the cloud exploded as we delved into the internal squabbles and ego problems in Telangana. Suddenly, the momentum we had created to dislodge BRS lost momentum. Although there was no erosion on the ground in our support base, Morale is a little bit low,” said the BJP leader in the state.
BJP leaders in the state said Rajender and Reddy were against the strategy of not running a CM candidate before the elections in which she is looking to win power in Telangana for the first time. The party will not tolerate the pursuit of important positions and additional responsibilities and the demand to be put forward as a CM candidate, or to dictate the choice of state party chief. There are senior leaders like G. Kishan Reddy and Ki Laxman who have spent decades in the party and still do not make such demands, the BJP leader said, adding that Shah and Nada tried to defuse the situation by meeting Rajender and Raj Gopal Reddy. in New Delhi on Saturday.
The BJP central leadership is said to be dissatisfied with the two after Unity of State failed to bring in Pongoleti Srinivasa Reddy, former MP for Khammam, and former Minister of State Gopali Krishna Rao. Srinivasa Reddy and Rao were among at least 33 BRS party leaders who joined the Congress at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in New Delhi on Monday with party leader Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun outside.
