The flood situation in Assam has improved slightly as water recedes in almost all rivers including the mighty Brahmaputra, which earlier flowed above the danger level.
The effects of the first wave of floods are now bringing back the nightmares of those affected who lost their homes and farmland. More than 5 people were affected by the floods while five people lost their lives.
The first wave of floods affected more than 22 districts, with more than 2 thousand people affected 67 thousand people in Bagali, followed by Nalbari where 70 thousand people affected, followed by Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Baka and others.
CNN-News18 traveled to hard-hit Bagale district to witness the damage the floods have done to the place and its residents.
A senior citizen of around 80, Hiren Talukdar from Shantipur, Doloi Gaon, Bajali spoke to CNN-News18 and recounted how his place was completely damaged, forcing his son, daughter-in-law and grandson to rush to a higher place. A handful of essential things they can carry.
“We lost everything in this flood. Our refuge called home is completely destroyed. Somehow we saved our lives and escaped. My grandson has been hungry for three days now. No electricity, no food. The nights are terrifying. No public representative has even visited us to listen and see.” our misfortune.”
Heren said with tears in her eyes that she suffers because of the floods every year. “After we make everything by working day and night, we lose our paddy field. Our house and our livestock are swept away. It is very difficult to build a house and see it being washed away by violent flood waters.”
Hiren’s daughter-in-law said, “We are happy that we were able to save our son. Until now, we only got drinking water in the name of flood relief. I heard that relief materials will be distributed, but it has already been three nights and two days.”
Hiren’s grandson is in class 2 and can’t go to school because of the flood. Now that the water level has receded, it will take them some time to remove the mud, level the ground, and rebuild their home again.
In Shantipur, many homes were damaged, leaving hundreds homeless and living on embankments. A road was completely washed away, dividing the villagers into two parts.
The first wave of Assam flood affected more than 20,000 hectares of farmland and more than 1 lakh of animals.
CNN-News18 moved towards another worst-hit district of Nalbari to Burksimulu in Burbagh, where villages were empty even after the floodwaters receded. The villagers are sheltering in safe places. A similar situation was seen in Pattacharkochi.
A bridge and a road connecting Nalbari and Tamulpur were completely washed away due to floods making it impossible for people to move from one place to another.
An elderly woman (90 years old), as she was being helped by the SDF to reach the relief camp in their boats, said, “Everything is lost. We couldn’t save anything. I am an old lady, so my family thinks it is dangerous to stay there..so I I’m going to a relief camp. My son is still there in the water. My daughter-in-law and I are now going. Now even though the water is drying up, there are diseases that will affect people like us and the children.”
NDRF and SDRF work continuously for the safe transportation of people to relief camps.
As of Monday, 29 temporary relief camps have been set up in various places in the state, where more than 2,900 people are still staying. Two children have died due to floods in Assam in the last 24 hours. One Sartbari and one Barpetta have been reported dead.
However, as compared to last year, cases of flooding were much lower in Majuli, Dhemaji, Morigaon and rest of upper Assam due to embankment and flood control measures. Last year at this time, Assam had more than 100 people with Cough, and this year it’s about 5,000 people. Floods this time mainly affected Lower Assam. At present, there are no rivers flowing above the danger level. However, there are still heavy rain alerts in certain parts of Assam.
