In a bid to reduce waiting time for passengers, airport operator DIAL in Delhi has introduced Self Baggage Drop (SBD) at Terminal 3 to enhance the overall airport experience.

Not only will it reduce waiting time for passengers by about 15-20 minutes, but the facility also aims to streamline the process of dropping off baggage.

The facility can handle up to three passengers per minute, according to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).

Currently, domestic travelers will be able to use the facility, and it will be made available to international travelers after obtaining mandatory approvals. A total of 14 SBD machines were installed, including 12 automatics and 2 hybrids.

Currently, passengers flying through IndiGo will be able to use the facility, five other airlines, including Indian Airlines, Vistara, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and British Airways, are likely to allow the use of baggage drop. to their passengers in the near future,” DIAL said in a statement.

How to use the self baggage drop off facility

Passengers can use the SBD facility through a two-step process:

1. After issuing boarding passes and baggage tags at the self-check-in kiosk, passengers are required to tag their checked baggage.

2. At the SBD facility, they will have to scan their boarding pass, declare that their baggage is free of prohibited/dangerous items, and load their baggage onto the designated belt. Once the process is complete, the baggage will be automatically transferred to the sorting area and subsequently to the aircraft.

However, if the check-in baggage weight exceeds the limit allowed by the airline, the machine will not accept the check-in baggage. There will be a flight crew near the facility to assist passengers.

DIAL CEO Vedi Kumar Jaipuriyar said the Self-Baggage Drop facility aims to make passengers self-reliant while at the same time significantly reducing the time spent handling baggage.

He noted that DIAL has been working tirelessly towards maximizing passenger experience at Delhi Airport through various digitization and automation initiatives.

DIAL, a consortium led by GMR Airport Infrastructure Ltd, operates the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in the national capital.
