A 32-year-old man in Karnataka’s Kolar district allegedly slashed his wife’s boyfriend and drank his blood on June 19, even as the entire act was captured by a colleague in a video that has since gone viral.

Police arrested Vijay, a merchant from Mandyambet, for attempting to kill Marsh, a fellow villager, in his early thirties. They have started searching for Vijay’s cousin John Babu, who had allegedly filmed the incident.

Police said Vijay’s motive stemmed from his anger at the growing closeness between Marsh and his wife. The attack took place near Siddepalli Cross in Chintamani Taluk on 19 June and was recorded by Vijay’s cousin. Marsh survives the attack as Vijay uses a small knife which does not cause much damage. Police investigations revealed that Maresh and Vijay’s wife were constantly communicating on the phone, which further angered Vijay,” said one of the officers.

Vijay and his family, from Andhra Pradesh, settled in Chintamani 30 years ago. They were based in Mandyampet and led an itinerant lifestyle – selling various commodities, including edible oil, clothes, vegetables and other necessities. Maresh owns a Tata Ace car which he rents for transportation services and Vijay often rents his car.

Maresh reportedly developed a close companionship with Vijay’s wife, and engaged in lengthy telephone conversations which Vijay vehemently disapproved of. Despite being warned of the dire consequences several times, Marich allegedly ignored the warnings and continued with his behavior.

On 19 June, Vijay calls his cousin Babu, a B Com student, and asks him to arrange a rental trip with Maresh from Siddepalli Cross to a nearby farm. When Marsh arrives in his car, Vijay and Babu pick him up on their bike under the pretense of showing him the tomatoes that need to be transported. Instead of heading to the farm, the police said, they took him to a secluded place and committed the crime there before fleeing.

Marsh received timely medical assistance and survived the attack. Although Marsh refrained from filing a police complaint, the police registered a case after the video clip went viral on social media.
