The Governor of West Bengal, Dr C.

Bose, who is on a four-day trip to Darjeeling district, pays a surprise visit to the University of North Bengal where black flags are shown by members of the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress who also shout “go back” to him.

“I want to assess the situation of the panchayat elections myself. There have been some atrocities and some violence in different places in West Bengal,” Bose told reporters in Siliguri, the largest town in the northern part of the state.

The widespread violence over filing nominations for the three-tiered panchayat elections has left at least eight dead and several injured in different parts of the state in the past two weeks.

Election Commissioner Rajiva Sinha called the governor at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata on Sunday evening and they held a two-hour meeting.

“I would also like to meet the people, the survivors… the victims, and understand how this affected them,” the governor said Monday.

Informed sources said that apart from Darjeeling, Bose is likely to visit the violence-hit districts of Uttar Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri and Rashidabad districts.

The Governor has already visited two such places in the South 24 Parganas District.

Meanwhile, on his way to Darjeeling, Bose pays a surprise visit to North Bengal University here.

Members of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, the student wing of the Transitional Military Council, waved black flags to the governor, who is also the chancellor of the state-run university.

Bose held an hour-and-a-half meeting with Interim Vice Chancellor Sanchari Mukhopadhyay and other senior officials.

The governor is scheduled to convene a meeting with all vice-chancellors of all North Bengal universities on Wednesday.
