Chinese tech giant Baidu has launched its own ChatGPT competitor, the Ernie bot.

The Chinese search engine has been publicly testing the Ernie Bot in China since it was revealed in March. The chatbot is based on Baidu’s foundational AI model named Ernie. The base model is an artificial intelligence that is trained on huge amounts of data. The latest version of Baidu’s sample is called Ernie 3.5.

Quoting China Science Daily, Baidu said that Ernie 3.5 has surpassed ChatGPT in a number of benchmark tests. ChatGPT is based on OpenAI’s GPT 3.5 model.

Ernie 3.5 also outperformed GPT 4, OpenAI’s newer and more advanced model, in Chinese language tests, according to Science magazine.

Focusing on Baidu’s achievements underscores the intense competition underway in the field of generative AI with tech giants in the US and China rapidly advancing developments.

One of the tests cited by the Chinese Science Journal was based on standard entrance and qualification tests such as those required to enter college or qualify as a lawyer. Ernie 3.5 outperforms ChatGPT and GPT 4 in Chinese.

However, it was behind GPT 4 in English even though it was ahead of ChatGPT. This test was published by Microsoft.

Another test focused on the Chinese language and contains more than 13,000 multiple-choice questions covering more than 50 different topics. Ernie 3.5 was ahead of ChatGPT and GPT 4 in this evaluation.

A third test contains questions on various subjects such as sciences and humanities and was developed by a group of American universities. Ernie 3.5 was behind both ChatGPT and GPT 4.

Baidu talked about the advancements it has made in its AI field as it looks to take the lead in technology against competitors such as Ali Baba.

“Just three months after the beta release of Ernie Bot, Baidu’s large language model (LLM) built on top of Ernie 3.0, Ernie 3.5 has achieved vast improvements in effectiveness and functionality,” Haifeng Wang, Baidu’s chief technology officer, said in a statement.

“These improvements are evident in creative writing, questions and answers, inference, and code generation, as well as in training performance and inference performance.”

Baidu said that one of the distinguishing features of its latest model is the ability to access “plug-ins” which are essentially apps that can be accessed via the Ernie Bot. Baidu’s search feature is integrated with Ernie Bot via a plugin, for example.
