Defending champions England will start the 2023 ODI World Cup in India with a match against New Zealand on the opening day on Thursday, October 5, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The final match of the league stage, captained by Joss Butler, will be against Pakistan on November 12 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
England’s match against arch-rivals Australia is scheduled to be played on November 4 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Their match against fellow white-ball giants India is scheduled to be played at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday, October 29.
England will stand the rare chance of retaining both ICC White Ball Trophies if they can win the 2023 ODI World Cup. They have won the coveted T20 World Cup in Australia in November 2022.
A total of 10 teams will participate in the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup. Eight teams have already qualified through the Premier League, while the remaining two slots will be decided by the ongoing ODI World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe.
Just like the inaugural competition, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is also set to host the final match on Sunday, November 19.
England does not have fond memories of its previous visits to India to attend ICC events. The team lost the final of the 2016 T20 World Cup against the West Indies and in the 2011 ODI World Cup jointly held by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and withdrew at the quarter-final stage.
The team will also return to the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where they played a thriller against India and lost to Ireland during the 2011 edition of the tournament,
