Petra Kvitova recently opened up about her struggles on and off the court over the years, saying she almost stopped playing tennis. Fortunately, the experience made the Czech more flexible, which strengthened her love of the game.
Now, 33, Kvitova has won two titles this year — the Miami Open and the Berlin Open — taking her total tally to 31 WTA Tour titles. The world number nine will head to the upcoming Wimbledon Championships, where she has won twice, as one of the favourites.
Speaking to dw.com ahead of her SW19 campaign, the former world number two recalled her first Wimbledon title in 2011, saying she can still remember her trajectory clearly and marvels at how quickly time flies.
“Winning a title is a great feeling, and even more so when I win it on grass, my favorite surface,” said Kvitova. “I still remember exactly how I won Wimbledon 12 years ago. It’s incredible how time passes. It feels like it was yesterday.” .
Turning her attention to her career and the hardships she had to endure along the way, Kvitova added that she still had the drive to pursue success, along with the experience required due to her age.
“So many things have changed in my life. I’ve had really tough times on and off the court, and there have been moments where I really doubted whether I’d ever play tennis again.
“I think what has allowed me to continue here is my love for tennis. I still have the drive to do important things, and age has given me the experience to be smarter on the court,” said Petra Kvitova.
The left-hander won two titles at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014.
“I think there might be some surprises for the leaders during the tournament.” – Petra Kvitova on her fortunes at Wimbledon
Focusing on this year’s Wimbledon Championships, Petra Kvitova noted that she does not consider herself the favorite for the tournament yet.
At the same time, having recently won the Berlin WTA 250 championship on grass, the Czech admits she is full of confidence as she sent a warning shot to those before her on the favourites.
“I don’t feel like a favorite because everything is so different at Grand Slam tournaments. There’s a lot of pressure, and the best in the world are doing their best. I want to enjoy the experience, and realize that if I play my best, anything can happen.”
She added:
“This week was very important for my confidence and I think there may be some surprises for the top seed during the tournament,” said Petra Kvitova.
