The Labor leader at UK India Week said at the India Global Forum at UK India Week that the trade deal being negotiated between India and Britain is only the first step in a strategic partnership that goes beyond that.
Sir Keir Starmer, Leader of the UK Opposition, used a keynote speech at the UK and India week at the Global India Forum, to declare that Labor under him would be a transforming party looking beyond the shadows of the past to collaborate with modern India.
“I have a clear message for all of you today – this is the Changing Labor Party. We have embraced the strength of the establishment across the board. Talking about India’s current standing in the world, Starmer said that this is an opportunity for it to be the century of India. “When the histories of two countries intertwine like ours, that can cast a long shadow. But I don’t see that shadow over India today. I see a modern nation, a confident nation, a nation that knows, while there are profound challenges in the world right now, that is without a doubt.” A time when the stability of nations is under threat, and that the opportunity is there for this to be an Indian Century, in which India shines as the largest democracy and a major contributor to global growth and prosperity.”
Advocating for a new approach to India, the Labor leader said, “The challenge, as I now see it, is for Britain to emerge from the shadows of her mind, to set aside the entitlements of history and deepen our relationship with the real India, the modern India, the future India.”
Asked about the sometimes difficult relationship between the Labor Party and India in the past, Starmer replied, “There are so many issues in the Labor Party that over the last two years we have made the frank decision to change our party, to look at the world in a different way, and to realize when it comes to India what a country it is.” Incredible, strong, important India, modern India moving forward, ensuring we have the right relationship going forward.
