After Commissioner Meerut Selvakumari Jayarajan’s dog went missing on Sunday night, police officers knocked on the doors of at least 500 homes with a picture of a Siberian Husky and combed through CCTV footage, officers said.

However, Jearajan said she did not seek police help because her dog “accidentally crept out of the house” and was not stolen.

“My dog was not stolen. Therefore, police assistance was not sought, and the police were not involved in the search.

A police officer at the Civil Lines Police Station said that individuals searched for the dog although they were not directed to him. “We were told that the dog went missing on Sunday evening. None of the officials directed us to find it…” said a senior officer. But we rushed to her residence and made a search of the commissioner’s official residence. We could not find the dog. Early in the morning on Monday, we started the search again, knocking on the doors of houses in the area with a picture of the Commissioner’s pet, and asking people if they had seen it.We were joined by a team from Nagar Nigam (Municipal Corporation). We also examined CCTV footage from shops and houses near the Commissioner’s residence, but to no avail “.

The commissioner said on Twitter that a family living nearby had found their dog and they looked after it until they returned the pet to them on Monday night after discovering it belonged to them. She thanked the family and said, “It all happened in less than a day.”

Harpal Singh, Animal Welfare Officer of Nagar Nigam, said the pet dog is registered with the municipality company.

The last time a case of missing pets was reported in Uttar Pradesh was in February 2014, when seven buffaloes belonging to Azam Khan, the powerful minister in the then Akhilesh Yadav state government, were stolen. The buffaloes were eventually found from various places, but three policemen were suspended for “dereliction of duty” in connection with the case.
