On the occasion of the International Day for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises celebrated Udyami Bharat-MSME Day by launching CHAMPIONS 2.0 portal and mobile application and signing several agreements.

“This year, the Ministry of MSMEs will focus on promoting technology and innovation, as well as strengthening the association at the country level in terms of programs such as PMEGP, Cluster Development Program and Infrastructure Development,” an official at the event said.

Presently, India has more than Rs 6 crore MSMEs and according to the officials, Udyam registration, also known as MSME registration portal, has reached a record high of Rs 2 crore since its launch on July 1, 2020.

Through this portal, it becomes easy to get Government Approval, Udyam Appreciation Certificate and Unique Number. This certification is required for legal and operational certification of small or medium-sized businesses.

Of the registered companies, 97% are micro enterprises, 2.7% are small enterprises, and 0.3% are medium enterprises. “The focus of the Ministry of MSMEs is not only to empower SMEs but also to have schemes that will benefit the micro-enterprises,” said one of the officials.

CHAMPIONS PORTAL 2.0

The government launched the CHAMPIONS portal, an ICT-based system that helped MSMEs to easily register grievances, in 2020. This covered 30 states and involved over 70 field staff and all banks. During the 2022-23 fiscal year, the portal had 16,262 grievance reports and during the same period, 16,221 cases were resolved.

CHAMPIONS 2.0 is a new version of the portal, which includes an AI-powered chatbot, multi-language option (Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu) and real-time comments like as well as analysis.

Hackathon

According to the officials, after the theme-based Hackathon 2.0 was launched on October 2 last year, a total of 632 Host Institutions (HIs) participated and 276 winning ideas were awarded during the MSME Day event.

This hackathon covered several sectors such as agriculture, healthcare and energy. The majority of the selected most successful ideas (80) came from one specific topic, “Low Cost Domestic Digital Healthcare System”, while 31 and 28 ideas were selected for digital agriculture and electric vehicles, respectively.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises launched Hackathon 3.0 for women, which covers five areas such as agriculture, healthcare, energy, services, and various sectors. The portal will be published from June 27 to July 11.

geotag application

The Ministry is working on geo-tagging application for MSME units, and the data collected from this application will be shared with the PM-Gati Shakti portal. It will include the latitude and longitude of the physical location of projects under the DFOs MSE-CDP, MSME and MSME Offices, Test Centers and Technology Centres. The application will be able to take on-site photos of institutions, infrastructure and facilities, while users will get office-specific information by pinning a geopoint on a map.

It is understood that geo-tagging certain images helps in understanding the status of projects and inputs to the approval process.

5G in MSME

In cooperation with the Communications Department, the ministry also decided to introduce 5G technology in the micro, small and medium enterprise sector under the design component of the innovative scheme for small and medium enterprises.

According to an official, based on requests for ideas on how 5G can be used for the benefit of the sector, the ministry will select the best ideas and those selected will be able to participate in the Mobile India conference in October. Financial support will be provided to implement the ideas under the scheme.
