2 lakh rupees were robbed at gunpoint inside the Pragati Maidan tunnel, two people have been arrested by the police in the case.

Delhi Police has beefed up security at the exit and entry points of the tunnel and deployed three personnel, including one on a police patrol bike, the officers said.

A delivery agent at a private company in Chandni Chowk and his partner were robbed inside the tunnel by six people on bicycles on Saturday.

Television footage of the incident emerged on Monday, showing three bikes with two people each surrounding a white Maruti Swift Dzire. One of the accused steps aside, goes to the driver’s seat and holds him at gunpoint, while another goes to the back seat and picks up the bag.

A senior police officer said, “All of the accused wear helmets so it’s a job to capture their faces. We traced the number plates… It appears to be an inside job where the accused received a tip-off about the money transfer. We are interrogating the complainant’s company staff and analyzing call detail records.” Police said the two suspects being held in Barari are being questioned. “It is being confirmed that they are involved,” said one of the officers.

“In order to avoid arrest, the accused used stolen Apache bikes and used stolen number plates of the same model of the bike,” said a source. Usually, criminals do not use bicycle number plates of the same bike model and choose random number plates.

Police said the search is on for the other suspects. A senior police officer said, “We have scanned more than 300 surveillance cameras where the accused, who are likely all in their 20s, were last seen in Majnu ka Tilla… They were seen fleeing towards Uber Delhi and we suspect they are They went out of town.”

Police said the two complainants – Patel Sajjan Kumar and his friend Jigar Patel – were heading towards Gurgaon in a taxi to deliver a bag full of cash to an acquaintance in the hospital when the robbery took place.

Pranav Tayal, DCP (New Delhi) said, “They have lodged a written complaint at Tilak Marg Police Station claiming that they had hired an Ola taxi from Lal Quila and were on their way to Gurugram, however, when they entered the tunnel, they were arrested and robbed.”

“We have increased security at the entrance and exit of the tunnel for the time being and we will reassess the arrangement in a few days,” said a police officer.
