Indian men’s soccer captain Sunil Chhetri broke yet another record as India drew 1-1 with Kuwait in their Group A match of the AFC Championship on Tuesday at the Sri Kantirava Stadium in Bangalore.

With India winning a corner kick in first-half injury time, Chhetri would hook the delivery coming from the first right over, a fine ball that beat the goalkeeper to his right to give India a 1–0 lead.

The goal was Chhetri’s fifth in the competition this year and his 24th in the AFC Championship, a new record. Chhetri overtook Maldives’ Ali Ashfaq to move to the top of the goalscoring list in the competition.

India entered the competition on Tuesday with 4-0 and 2-0 wins over Pakistan and Nepal respectively. While Chhetri scored a hat-trick against Pakistan, he was one of the scorers for India against Nepal.

Drawn against Kuwait, India finished Group B behind the latter. In the second group, Lebanon leads the points balance after the second round with six points, while the Bangladesh national team occupies second place with three points.
