It was reported that four people sustained gunshot wounds after the Iraqi Communist Party (Maoist) and supporters of the ruling Transitional Military Council clashed in Dumkal district of Murshidabad district on Monday.

While the Iraqi Communist Party (ICP) claimed that their convoy was attacked by supporters of the ruling party, the Transitional Military Council claimed that they were provoked and that three party members sustained gunshot wounds. On the other hand, the CPI(M) party claimed that one of their supporters was injured in the “shooting”.

Elsewhere, family members of BJP MLA Mukutmani Adhikari were attacked by ruling Trinamool party workers in Ranagat Krishnaganj district of Nadia district on Sunday night after a clash.

According to police sources, an improvised bomb was thrown near the house of the MLA on Sunday around 10:30 pm, which led to a clash between BJP and TMC supporters in the area.

Adhikari’s father, mother and brother were injured while trying to stop the accident. “All three injured family members have been taken to hospital and are in stable condition,” said a local police officer.

The Ranaghat MLA alleged that some Congress backed miscreants in Trinamool attacked BJP workers and supporters in the area. When my father went to stop the problem, he was attacked too. My brother and mother were also attacked,” Adhikari said.

Police said they have arrested two people in connection with the incident. We have received two conflicting complaints and two people have been arrested. A senior police officer said, “The investigation is ongoing.

According to police sources, a member of the Transitional Military Council and a BJP supporter has been arrested. A huge police sit-in was also set up in the area.

The BJP is unnecessarily trying to politicize a small incident. “There is no political connection to the incident,” said Rajesh Bhumik, head of the TMC’s Rangat 2 Block unit.

Meanwhile, 17 Congress candidates from Malda applied to the Calcutta High Court asking for security. The candidates alleged that they were being threatened because of their inability to campaign in the panchayat.

Among those who sought security were 15 panchayat candidates from the Manichak bloc in Malda and two panchayat candidates from Samiti. The petition is likely to be heard on Tuesday.

Since the announcement of the election date for the panchayat, there have been reports of disturbances from various parts of the state. Districts like Bhangar and Canning have reported many violent incidents. At least nine people have died in various violent incidents since June 9.
