Arsenal have reportedly made a massive bid to sign Manchester City target Declan Rice from West Ham United. The Gunners made a club record bid of £100m with £5m in add-ons.
As David Ornstein reports from The Athletic, Arsenal have made their third bid to sign Rice from West Ham. The new offer is £15m for the second offer and is a statement from Gunners to seal the deal.
Jacob Steinberg of the Guardian has now added that West Ham have not accepted the offer because they are unhappy with the payment structure. He added that talks are underway between the two clubs, and the Hammers are awaiting Manchester City’s response.
Arsenal’s second bid was rejected earlier this month when it offered £75m plus £15m in add-ons. Manchester City matched the total fee, bidding £80m plus £10m, but their bid was also rejected.
West Ham have already admitted they will allow Rice to leave this summer because they have an agreement with the club, as long as they get the right fee.
Graeme Souness has questioned whether Declan Rice is the right person for Arsenal. The Liverpool legend paid tribute to the West Ham United star but added that the midfielder lacks clever passing in him.
He was on talkSPORT when he stated that the move was perfect for Arsenal because they were getting their best player. However, this may not be the best move for the Englishman as he will not improve under Mikel Arteta. Souness said:
“If you’re looking for a great midfielder, I don’t think he has enough of a nice passing to him. I think he’s going to be a really good guy, he’s going to be great to work with, he’s very athletic, he feels danger so he’s got that part of the line player game.” Central midfield, he’s got that. He can put himself in positions where the players he plays against want to find the striker or make a nice pass, he knows that and not everyone can have that.”
he added:
“He’s got it instinctively, but what he doesn’t have is he’s nice and smart when he gets into the final third. I think he’s a little bit more predictable when he gets the ball personally. He would make Arsenal better. Is he personally getting better? I’m not sure.”
Manchester City released Ilkay Gundogan after his contract expired at the end of the season. The German joined Barcelona on a free transfer and is considering Declan Rice as his replacement.
