that Audio Recording Former President Donald Trump in 2021 discussing what he called a “top secret” document on Iran that he admitted he could not declassify because he was out of office seemed to contradict his recent assertion that the material he was referring to was just news clippings.
Federal prosecutors cited portions of a transcript of a two-minute recording of Trump in the indictment against Trump charging that he endangered national security secrets by mishandling classified documents after leaving office and then obstructing government efforts to recover them. The recording captured his July 2021 conversation with a publisher and writer working on a memoir written by Mark Meadows, Trump’s recent chief of staff. In it, Trump discussed what he described as the “secret” plan related to Iran drawn up by General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Department of Defense. Trump was citing the document in refuting an account Milley feared having to stop him from manufacturing a crisis with Iran in the period after Trump lost his re-election bid in late 2020. The audio, which is likely to appear as evidence at Trump’s impeachment case documents, was first shown Once on Monday by CNN and also picked up by The New York Times.
