France’s hugely popular annual Bordeaux wine festival took a futuristic turn this year when fireworks were replaced by a drone show. The sky over the Garonne River in Bordeaux was lit up by more than 400 drones on Friday and Saturday.
The 20-minute program attracted spectators as the drones created formations such as pouring wine into glasses, planting vines, and so on. The show concluded by rearranging the drones to say “Bordeaux celebrates wine” in giant letters in the sky.
This year, the organizers chose a drone display over fireworks in an effort to take a more environmentally friendly approach to the festivities. The drones are manufactured and operated by the French company Dronisos. Interestingly, the company derived its name from Dionysus, the ancient Greek god of wine.
