Former Indian player Saba Karim expressed his dissatisfaction with not considering Indian star Ravindra Jadeja for a leadership role (vice-captain) in the experimental Indian side. His remark comes after Rahane was re-appointed as deputy captain of the Test side for the West Indies tour.
According to Karim, Jadeja is not projectable in all three formats, and thus should have been considered. He also named the young Shubman Gill as Rohit Sharma’s deputy for the Test series against the West Indies.
“I don’t know why people don’t even talk about Ravindra Jadeja. He’s a regular in all forms for the Indian side and has huge contributions to the Test success in India too. How come he’s never talked about as a captain?” Karim told Sportskeeda.
He also talked about the possibility of getting Shubman Gill to be considered for the future.
“He is irreplaceable in all three formats of the national team and equally capable of leading the national team. Or if not him, maybe Shubman Gill if the Indian selectors think he is the future. I’m just saying, there are some candidates.”
Jadeja’s stint as captain of the Chennai Super Kings IPL series was not fruitful, and that was the highest level as he was part of a leadership group. Karim was also unhappy with the selectors which made Ajinkia Rahane vice-captain for the upcoming West Indies series.
Karim said, “When you look at transfer when you pick youngsters like Yasavi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaekwad, why make Ajinkya Rahani the vice-captain? What is the logic behind that? He came back after being dropped from the Test side. He played one Test match. He did well, That’s totally fine.
“But if you’re looking for the future, if you want to build a side, if you want to equip a cricketer, why go back to Ajinkya Rahane? I mean, with due respect to him and his abilities as a captain, we need to look at preparing a youngster who could have taken over from Rohit. Sharma in times to come.”
