Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia used to be best friends until the inception of LIV Golf. The duo fell apart after the latter moved to the controversial Saudi-backed series. The sweet affair ended and the two old friends began to engage in verbal fights.
Now, McIlroy and Garcia seem to have made peace with each other. After announcing the recent PGA Tour-PIF merger, the Spaniard has now come forward to announce that he has ended the feud with the Northern Irishman. Garcia, who didn’t explicitly call McIlroy by name Wednesday at Valderrama, said he “got a friend back” after the fallout from the PGA Tour-LIV golf war.
Speaking to the media in Spain ahead of the LIV Golf Valderrama match on Wednesday, Sergio Garcia said:
“The US Open, it was an amazing event for me,” Garcia said Wednesday in Spain. “I feel like I played well. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that I, you know, got my boyfriend back. And that’s what matters most.”
“I think at the end of the day, the important thing is that we got together and talked—we were friends who both wanted to go back to this place. Like I said, no doubt it was the saddest part of all this, these friendships gone sour.”

Garcia’s comment comes two weeks after Spanish outlet Ten Golf said the Spaniard had sent a text message to McIlroy, hoping to talk. The golfer reportedly wanted to settle the differences between them. According to the Irish Golf Bureau, McIlroy appeared to make a “call me” gesture to Garcia at the US Open while the latter was finishing on the 18th.
It appears that the conversation has taken place and the two old friends have sorted out their problems.
Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia’s feud at the 2022 US Open goes viral at the 2023 US Open
The feud between Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia was fueled when the former took a strong stance on the PGA Tour at the 2022 US Open. Commenting on the pair’s feud, McIlroy said:
“He (Garcia) was basically telling me to shut up about LIV, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I got offended and I sent him a few daggers and that was it.”
The comments reportedly hurt Garcia. The couple, who have been best friends on and off the golf course for years, called their fallout “very sad.”
Garcia said:
“I think it’s very sad. I think we’ve done a lot of things together and had a lot of experiences that made him dump it just because I decided to go to a different tour, well, it doesn’t sound like a lot of maturity; it lacks maturity, really. I respect his choices, but He doesn’t seem to respect the choices I make.”
It’s worth noting that Rory McIlroy was so close to Sergio Garcia that he was even a bridesmaid in his wedding in 2017. It’ll be interesting to see how the golfers date back now.
